I learned quickly the effects on my mental state and physical body from working in a state of heightened stress 100% of the time. Even during down time, in this job you are \\\"always on\\\" - always on guard, always professional, always prepared - which really means always stressed.
This is a very Yang way of being, in contrast to my natural Yin feminine. I came to realize that this was not a sustainable way of life for me and I had to find ways to bring balance.
This is when I began researching the effects of stress, burnout, and something called the Human Giver Syndrome.
Human Givers are people who have a duty or moral obligation to other human beings. To give everything they have- their time, their attention, their patience, their love, their rest, their bodies, their hopes and dreams, their very lives sometimes, sacrificed on the altar of other humans' comfort and convenience. (Borrowed from Emily Nagoski Burnout)
Once I became aware that stress is a natural part of the human condition, and while dealing with stressors versus dealing with stress in the body are two separate actions - I began to see more balance and wellness in my life.
This is a practice for me, it's not always perfect, and I am constantly striving to learn and grow more in my practice.
As someone who has mental health concerns in my family history, as well as a history of being a perfectionist and people-pleaser, I know whole-heartedly that this is a pivotal part of my overall well-being.
I know that taking care of my self is not as easy as scheduling in a workout and eating right, but that there are deeper steps I have to take on a regular basis to truly be well. I don't see wellness as a state of being, but rather as a state of action. The ability to flow from stress into calm and back into stress (and not getting stuck in one or the other!)
If you would like to learn more about this, and join in the journey of discovering managing stress (not just stressors) in your life - then follow along! This is not only relevant for first responders, cops, military, but for anyone who has a high stress job, family, or life.

Health coaching is great for anyone ready and inspired to make changes in their life, no matter where you are in the change process (from stuck on where to begin, all the way to maintenance and ready for the next challenge or just needing accountability and a partner to help navigate obstacles and setbacks). As a health coach, I provide you with the space to sort through your unique challenges and help you identify goals, and strategies and solutions that work for you.
I am trained in a Functional Health aligned program, which allows me to work with a wide spectrum of areas of health. I specifically enjoy working with individuals around any of the following areas: hormonal health, energy levels, sleep optimization, weight loss through intuitive nutrition, body awareness, movement, stress management, pregnancy, postpartum, breastfeeding, personal clarity, and/or life balance.
Health Coaches and Registered Dieticians both have training in nutrition. RD's are specially educated and licensed to provide specific nutrition advice, protocols, and recommendations, but tend to be less available for ongoing support to clients around behavior change. Coaches tend to also take into account non-dietary aspects of life that contribute to healing (such as lifestyle, stress, exercise, sleep, play, technology use). Health coaches and RD's can work collaboratively to support clients through implementing nutritional advice and protocols.
Therapists and Coaches are both trained in the art and science of facilitating behavior change and helping clients enhance decision-making, explore emotions, values, and strengths, and make better use of their resources.
The main differentiator is in education and licensing.
Therapists are licensed to work with clinical in nature distress and concerns, wherein coaches work with non-clinical distress.
To borrow from Cavangaugh's Evidence-Based Coaching Handbook, one main delineation is that a proximal goal of therapy is to help clients reduce distress where the level of tension is so high to be destructive to the person; versus coaches are called on to stretch comfort levels and increase flow of information, energy, and diversity to help clients move out of stable mindsets and behaviors.
The science of behavior change shows that achieving true, sustainable change takes time, on average, 6 months. Additionally, I practice a holistic approach, allowing us to look at how all areas of your life are connected.
You will undoubtedly start seeing and feeling results much sooner that 3-6 months, but along the journey you will learn how to sustain new habits and cultivate deeper connections. That is, health coaching goes far beyond achieving quick, short term, unsustainable results with a fad diet.
If you still believe a shorter time frame may be more appropriate for you, I am open and happy to explore this together.
If after completing all of your sessions you feel you would benefit from extra coaching, I am always open to discussing options to extend our work together.
Absolutely! Most of my practice is online, over video calls through Zoom. To modernize a French Philosopher's quote originally about friendship, \\\"the arms of health coaching are long enough to reach from one end of the world to another.\\\" In other words, you can achieve the same success this way as you would with in-person sessions.
Nope! As your coach, I challenge you, support you in attaining goals and breaking through limiting beliefs, and we co-create action plans that generate forward movement. I put you in the driver seat of the entire process so you can learn to take ownership and responsibility over your health. I will never assign you homework or make you feel the need to report back to me.
At this time (2021), most health coaches cannot submit claims to insurance payers for potential reimbursement. The industry is changing fast, and eventually, this will change!
More context: The National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) is currently coordinating the efforts to move from Category III CPT codes to Category I CPT codes within the next couple of years. Payers typically wait until codes have Category I approval to begin reimbursement.
Functional Medicine is a systems biology–based approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease.
As one example: You go to the doctor complaining of canker sores. Under the conventional medicine model, they prescribe a mouth rinse to you, and even go so far as to say you can only come in with one issue at a time. That's it... appointment over. A functional medicine approach, which looks at the root cause, would run more comprehensive tests to test you for celiac disease, or another root cause, because clearly there is some kind of inflammation in your body, and something is causing that inflammation. That is, functional medicine thinks of the canker sore as a symptom of something deeper, not as the problem in and of itself. FM addresses the root cause of disease, instead of just using drugs that work like band-aids but seldom fix the underlying problem (Kresser, Unconventional medicine, p.30).
So where does a functional health coach come into play? When a patient needs more guidance and support on diet, managing stress, adopting a new physical activity routine, or making other important behavioral and lifestyle changes. The answer to this question is a new collaborative model of care that includes allied providers like health coaches who hold patients' hands through every step of the process. Health coaches offer the support patients need to successfully implement the interventions that a functional-ancestral approach prescribes. (Kresser, Unconventional Medicine, p. 32)
Although I am not trained to practice medicine, I have received intensive education and have a clear understanding of functional medicine and ancestral health concepts like how food is really information that changes gene expression, hormones, microbiome, and brain chemistry. This understanding gives me a powerful lens for working with both clients and practitioners.
Since I believe coaching is most successful when both the coach and client are fully engaged in the process, I would never make a client use sessions when they no longer want to be coached. (Our contract is NOT binding). Once we begin working together, our agreement will include instructions on how to cancel, and any unused sessions would be fully refundable to you.
